“Ke sorti kambradu, teng bong.” (“Hello my friends, hope all is well”), I'm Martin Thesei... ra, a Malacca Portuguese (Kristang) descendant born and raised in Praya Lane Melaka, Malaysia. Growing up in Praya Lane was like growing up in paradise. Unobstructed views of the Straits of Malacca from our backyard, the sound of waves gently caressing the coast in the background. When night fell, the stars would sparkle brilliantly in the darkness as if they were shining only for us! This place was once a vibrant fishing village until our seafront was reclaimed in 1984. I learned fishing from my late uncle since my childhood days. Later I decided to promote Kristang Heritage Cuisine which forms an integral part of Melaka’s rich and unique cuisine that is more than 600 years old. One of the main dishes that I am very proud of is my home-made salted-fish, mango pickle paste and you must try it because they can't be found anywhere else in Malaysia! Music has always been part of my life. I have been a choir member of the Assumption Chapel since I was a teenager and also involved in the Kristang Music scene with the guitar and the ukelele is my favourite instrument. I hope to open through this live on-site virtual experience a new page for you to understand and appreciate where I come from, my heritage, traditions and the culture of my Community! 显示更多

An enjoyable sing along session, with me and my guitar. This might be your first encounter with the Kristang's music and you will get to know more about the lifestyle of Portuguese in Melaka through the lyrics of songs composed by the community members of Portuguese Cultural Society, which was established in 1967 by the late Bernard Santa Maria.

Each song was inspired by true stories and the lifestyle of Portuguese community in Melaka in the 60's and 70's. I feel that these songs are very meaningful as it carries the heritage of Malacca Portuguese and it is my honour to be able to pass on to the next generation. My uncle, Don Biens and myself love music and we compiled some of the best Kristang songs in an album called Festa De San Pedru in 2006.

On this virtual experience, I’ll be sharing the lyrics and its messages that each song carries coupled with some of my personal stories as a Kristang in Malaysia.

Let's have some good time together and rest assured we will have lots of fun! I can’t wait any longer to meet you and sing along with me virtually.

Highly recommended. Martin gives us a perfect introduction to Melakan heritage through a context of songs and oral tradition. Although it is thoroughly enjoyable even if you don't know Portuguese (the show is run in English), this is an extraordinary experience for Portuguese speakers, from anywhere around the world. The spoken Kristang is very familiar, the vocabulary is irresistible, and the songs give us fascinating glimpses of local lives possibly different from ours, but with so much in common. Wherever there are Portuguese links, there are aways 'rede' and 'te kuseh apom'. Ta alegrah, Martin and team! Sergio Teixeira Coelho
