Virtual Safari Experience With Bornean Sun Bear

Hosted by Dr. Wong Siew Te - The Papa Bear

Malaysian Chinese, born in 1969 and raised in Penang at northern Peninsular Malaysia. “Wo... ng” as I am known as, is actually my family name, and “Siew Te” is my first name. I love animals all my life. Since I was a first grader, “animal expert” was my ambition on the student record until the very last year in high school. I started my career as a field biologist/research assistant doing wildlife survey, camera trapping, radio collaring and tracking large mammals, taking care of endangered species at Pingtung Wildlife Rescue Center, and all of goofy stuff people seen in Discovery Channel. In 1998, I began to study the ecology of Malayan sun bears in a rainforest of Malaysian Borneo as a project for M.S. thesis, in University of Montana, USA. I continue my doctorate study with the same university, same study area looking at the ecology of bearded pigs, sun bears, and rainforest. In 2008, I founded the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sandakan and be the Chief Executive Officer until today. Show More

What we Will do

Did you know, bears do climb trees and they do love honey… well, at least our sun bear loves both. Do join us as we explore the daily life of Helarctos Malayanus a.k.a sun bears in Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center (BSBCC).

Bornean sun bears are the smallest among the bear species in the world. Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center (BSBCC) is located at Sepilok, Sandakan City, Sabah state, where 65 rescued ex-captive sun bears are residing now.

We understand that travel is restricted at this moment, so, I will be hosting a live virtual experience with you, your friends or family, and the bears via a video conference platform. Yes, this is going to live and we will get to engage in interesting conversations about the bear and my center.

You will be guided through a journey at the center where you will get to take a closer look at the sun bear's movement, their natural habitat, and also, how they interact with each other. Besides that, I will be sharing some information about our local flora and fauna such as orangutans, macaques, squirrels, and diverse tropical tree species. If we are lucky enough, we may get to see some snakes taking their meal of the day.

This virtual experience is available every weekend at 11am or 2pm (excluding Saturday 2pm), Malaysia time (GMT+8)

In the event that the host has to cancel the scheduled session due to insufficient sign-ups and/or other unforeseen circumstances, we will inform the participants at least 3 days ahead of the scheduled session and participants can opt for a full refund OR to be rescheduled to another scheduled trip date.

My 7 years old boy was happy to be back to nature again! Thanks to Prof. Dr Wong for guiding us back to nature heritage and environment! We enjoy seeing the bears exploring in the wild while professor explaining about their daily life! Virtual tour can be fun! (and easy) especially with younger kids!

An amazing live virtual experience. Booked it for a 10 year old's birthday and he watched it live with friends and family scattered all around the world. Dr Wong was fantastic and really informative - one could feel his excitement through the screen and how much he cares for the bears. Thank you and we look forward to visiting in person.

My 6-year-old daughter and I enjoyed the session and learnt a lot more about sunbears, and it felt almost like an in-person trip with guests from other countries and hearing their questions during the session. Dr Wong's passion for the sunbears clearly shone! No question was too trivial or difficult for him, and my daughter revelled in the opportunity to be able to have a wildlife expert answer her questions (e.g. can sunbears run, how long can they live, what's your favourite animal). For budding wildlife enthusiasts, this will be a fantastic virtual learning opportunity. We have to do this tour in person at the BSBCC when borders reopen!
