Virtual Experience: Tribute To Praya Lane, Melaka

Hosted by Martin - The Malaysian Portuguese Chef & Chorister

“Ke sorti kambradu, teng bong.” (“Hello my friends, hope all is well”), I'm Martin Theseira, a Malacca Portuguese (Kristang) descendant born and raised in Praya Lane Melaka, Malaysia. Growing up in Praya Lane was like growing up in paradise. Unobstructed views of the Straits of Malacca from our backyard, the sound of waves gently caressing the coast in the background. When night fell, the stars would sparkle brilliantly in the darkness as if they were shining only for us! This place was once a vibrant fishing village until our seafront was reclaimed in 1984. I learned fishing from my late uncle since my childhood days. Later I decided to promote Kristang Heritage Cuisine which forms an integral part of Melaka’s rich and unique cuisine that is more than 600 years old. One of the main dishes that I am very proud of is my home-made salted-fish, mango pickle paste and you must try it because they can't be found anywhere else in Malaysia! Music has always been part of my life. I have been a choir member of the Assumption Chapel since I was a teenager and also involved in the Kristang Music scene with the guitar and the ukelele is my favourite instrument. I hope to open through this live on-site virtual experience a new page for you to understand and appreciate where I come from, my heritage, traditions and the culture of my Community!

This virtual experience is a novel idea of bringing the community to the visitors without physical presence of the latter. The duration of the virtual tour is good, not too long for it to be boring or taxing. Just nice. It is also an experience 'off the beaten track' and involving the elderly. We got to see culture, people, environment - past, present and also future. Thank you for this wonderful virtual experience. Kudos to the team! :-)

Thank you Encik Shaukani Abbas for organizing this with Buddyz Tour. Martin Theseira grew up on Praya Lane, Melaka and he takes us through his memories of growing up on here, it was wonderful to be 'invited' into Aunty's home and to have a virtual tea with her. Lovely to see Melaka from these perspectives! Am really looking foward to the next one.

I always wanted to learn about the Portuguese Settlement in Praya Lane. Martin being a Portuguese descendant provided me the answers. I really enjoyed the session and learnt lots of new information. Thank you Martin. Keep up with the good work.

This on-site "live" tour was amazing. I joined from Japan and I never imagined I could get so immersed via zoom. Martin is a warm and engaging host. He shows you around historical Praya Lane telling interesting stories about its heritage with a personal touch. I loved the tea party at the end of the tour. It was like being invited to a friend's house. The only thing I missed was not being able to taste the signature cake called "portugal" offered at the tea party. Maybe I should save that for my real visit to Praya Lane, once Covid is gone! I would also like to try Martin's homemade fish pickle paste on that occasion.

The guide is really entertaining wit the Q&A session and he also sing you a song before closing. Such an informative live walking tours and eventhough its just an online virtual tour its really interesting where we get to explore the history of Melacca especially Praya Lane while you just need to stay at your cozy home and been in totally safe environtment. It was a good platform since nowadays everything is just at our fingertip so easy for the youngster to get access as well as reasonable and affordable price offered. Don’t forget to sign up and explore more! Thank you
