Hike And Lunch With Temuan Tribe

Hosted by Daniel Teoh Yong Liang (Native Discovery Sdn Bhd)

My name is Daniel Teoh. I am a Malaysian born Chinese and am the youngest among 4 childre... n. I was born in Penang Island, where I spent the first 19 years of my life before moving to the small town of Semenyih in Selangor for university. I graduated with a master’s in civil engineering from the University of Nottingham in 2018, I now live in Subang Jaya, which I fondly consider my second hometown. Having studied civil engineering, I briefly experienced the field as working in the MRT tunnels and as a building draftsman but soon found my calling elsewhere in the social sector. I am the founder of the social enterprise, Native, where we work together with Orang Asli (native people) communities to create wonderful experiences for travellers to enjoy. I love learning new things about the world through people, places, and media. You could say that I am a very curious person! I like to look for adventures in lesser-known places and frequently visit small towns, local markets, and festivals. I am passionate about helping others nurture their own curiosity through these types of experiences. My skillsets are a mystery, even to me! At the very least, I know I am entrepreneurial and a quick learner. With little resources, you can trust I will still find a way to make it happen. I believe that being clear about your purpose for doing something will always lend you the strength to overcome the toughest challenges. I want to find new avenues to share the experiences that Native has created with our Orang Asli partners. A lot of who I am today is because of the hospitality and generosity I have been shown by my Orang Asli friends, and I would like to give others the opportunity to experience it too. Being a host enables me to meet new people and exchange stories with them. I believe every time people exchange ideas and experiences; we grow. In a world where everyone is always trying to convince you of something, I offer you an immersive and unbiased first-hand encounter with the Orang Asli for you form your own thoughts about Malaysia's first people. I like it most when guests can gain new perspectives. It really means a lot to me when people appreciate the little things, they experience on our trips together. My greatest achievement was when we hosted our first experience as Native! I remember being so scared nobody would be interested when we put our first listing online. Little did I know we would be fully booked a few hours later! I am most proud of how my work has been able to positively impact my friend, Faizul, who was our first Native host in Kampung Sungai Lalang. He has done so much to make our experiences come to life. From thinking he was doing me a favour by agreeing to bring a bunch of strangers into the forest, he now loves hosting guests and actively organises his community to become involved in the work we do together. The community really looks up to him and thinks of him as their own self-starting entrepreneur, which I fully agree with! I am not a specialist in any one thing... but I have a broad area of knowledge and you can be sure I will keep up with almost any type of conversation. I am passionate about nurturing a world where every person is able to pursue their potential as people. This means making sure everyone has their basic needs met so they can have the room to dream big. I have been involved in building homes for the Orang Asli with an organisation called Epic Homes for the past 5 years. I have also tried my hand at climate change advocacy before returning to more grassroots work. In the same way I have had many opportunities in my life, I want to help others find their own path forward. Show More

What we Will do

We think good things should come in twos.

Here at Native, our new hike and lunch at Serendah bundle do just that – it combines two of our popular Serendah tours into one, allowing you to have the full Native experience with our local guides.

Start off your day with an early hike through the forests of Bukit Beruang with local hike guides. As gazetted Orang Asli land, these trails are not openly available to the general public but, we have partnered with the Orang Asli land owners in bringing this one-of-a-kind hike to our guests. Throughout your hike, our guides will walk you through the history of their land, and share knowledge on the techniques that they use to maintain and live off the forest. You can expect to sample raw forest greens, spot 5 foot deep, colonial-times Siamese holes, learn how to weave with leaves, and bask in the culturally-rich tales that our hosts will regale you with.

After your hike, proceed on to enjoy a multi-course Orang Asli lunch prepared by local cooking experts. Menus are carefully curated by our team of cooks to tell their story, which they will walk you through as they share the origins and preparation of each dish with you. Discover just how the food culture of the Orang Asli is interconnected with other Malaysian cuisines, and leave Serendah will a newfound appreciation of Orang Asli food.

Every element of Orang Asli culture is living and can be fully experienced through two essential aspects that form their identity: nature and food. Be still, lean in, join us and experience it just as it was meant to be.

Experience is available on every Sunday, we will meet at 8:30am at the meeting point and start our journey there!!!

Guest Requirements
  1. Hikes are beginner-friendly, approximately 4.5 km (2.5 hours hike) (elevation approximately 134 m), while there are a few inclines, there will be plenty of rest stops to ensure that guests have a pleasant hike. We have had hikers of all fitness levels before!
  2. As we will be in natural, open spaces, mosquitoes will be present. We highly recommend bringing repellent to ensure you have a pleasant hike.
  3. All food prepared is halal. Our menus are also vegetarian-friendly.

**Experience Etiquette: **

1. Stay on the trail.

Refrain from stepping away from the intended trail and follow your hosts’ instructions at all times. Taking another route, switchbacks, and shortcutting would destroy vegetation and affect the timeliness of the experience. Protect the quality of your experience and stay on the designated trail.

2. Leave No Trace

-Take only pictures, leave only footsteps.

Leave rocks, plants, and artifacts where you found them for others to enjoy. Refrain from plucking plants in the forest, and also around the bamboo homestay.

-Dispose of waste responsibly. While there might not be any rubbish bins on your hike, there would be rubbish disposal facilities readily available once you’re at the lunch site or out of the forest - dispose of trash responsibly.

3. Be respectful of others

-The Orang Asli culture is beautifully intricate, and our hosts would be happy to share their knowledge. We welcome respectful curiosity and strive to create a safe environment for both our hosts and guests. Be considerate and courteous when conversing with one another.
