Hi everyone! My name is Jo Leen Yap, Malaysian Chinese born and raised in a small town called Bukit Mertajam, in Penang, Malaysia. I was exposed to nature at a very young age, where my dad would bring me for hiking, camping and even boating! My mom, on the other hand, is a great cook, inherited from my grandmother. I currently live in Jawi, the southern part of mainland Penang that comes with half an acre farmhouse compound, where my family and I grow our own food and raising four furry babies (dogs!) here. Our house is next to the forest; hence we live very close to nature. After working 2 years as a scientific and educational officer at Dark Cave Conservation Site and Tropical Spice Garden, I quit my full-time job and enrolled myself into postgraduate study to further embark my journey in wildlife research. Today, I am a final year PhD candidate of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), majority in Zoology (Primates). My journey in nature conservation and studying the dusky leaf monkeys motivate me to start my own community conservation platform, known as Langur Project Penang (LPP), where we are a working group under Malaysian Primatological Society (MPS), a registered NGO in Malaysia. I am now the head of a community science working group in Malaysia, Langur Project Penang (LPP). LPP is a research and outreach project on the ecology, behaviour and road ecology of dusky langurs (Trachypithecus obscurus) in Penang, Malaysia. Initiated in Jan 2016, LPP serves as a platform for environmental research and education to local students and the community. The volunteers (team members) of LPP are known as ‘Duskies’. LPP is the research and conservation grant recipients of various international foundations, such as The Rufford Foundation UK, and The Disney Conservation Grant. I was awarded as one of the Environmental Educators 30 Under 30 by the North America Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE) in year 2018. I am the first Malaysian to be honoured with this award. In addition, I felt tremendously blessed that I was given the opportunity to speak on the stage of TEDxPetaling Street and got featured in multiple international media coverage, including the recent feature in BBC Earth series, Primates. As a wildlife researcher, I am skilled with fieldwork methodology such as camera trapping, wildlife spotting, GPS navigation, vegetation plotting and many more. I am a great public speaker, a science communicator, a storyteller, where I utilize my interpersonal skills to enhance myself as an environmental educator. My mission is to conserve the Dusky Leaf Monkeys and the wildlife residents in Penang. I am also a licensed Green Badge Nature Guide in Malaysia, certified by Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) and Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN). I value our natural resources, flora and fauna. I aim to educate as many people as possible, to raise awareness toward wildlife conservation. As conservation is not just about protecting wildlife, but to change peoples’ mind, battling habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, minimize human-wildlife conflicts and to promote a world with better co-existence values. My team members and I will do our best in providing our guest a great experience in understanding and appreciating nature a little more. I look forward to hosting this experience with you and your friends and family!

Jo Leen and her team from Langur Project Penang were such excellent and amazing guides. Their passion for the forest and nature shone through their enthusiasm. Jo Leen was very knowledgeable about the local geography, the flora and also the fauna, explaining about the various things we came across along the hike. For coffee enthusiasts, you will surely enjoy the "kopi hutan" served during the break at the waterfall! It was also beautiful to see the old and abandoned Seraya dam - something not many get to. The hike itself was not difficult and only moderately challenging at certain parts. Jo Leen and her team paid close to attention to everyone's safety throughout the hike, so that was certainly appreciated. For those looking for something different to do, away from the crowded trails while supporting endangered dusky leaf monkey conservation at the same time, I highly recommend this experience with Jo Leen. The trip ended with some very delicious hawker food in Bukit Mertajam - a location only the locals will know! Thank you Jo Leen, Victor and Jie Long for a fantastic day out in the forest.
